The Sun Home Luminar 5-Person is a full-spectrum outdoor infrared sauna with a Canadian red cedar interior and an aluminum exterior. Fortune named it its best overall home sauna and gave it 4.5 out of 5. Wired was more critical and called it priced above competitors. Sun Home’s page listed it at $13,899 on sale, down from $14,499, on 2026-10-12. Check the maker for today’s price.

Who it’s for (and who should skip it)

It suits homeowners with outdoor space and a dedicated circuit who want a high-end, multi-person infrared cabin. Fortune says it is not for budget buyers, renters or anyone who wants a compact plug-and-play unit.

Skip it if:

  • You want steam. Wired is explicit that this is an infrared sauna, not a traditional one.
  • You live somewhere cold and damp. Wired’s reviewer had slow heat-up, and Sun Home itself warns it takes longer below 40°F without a weather cover.
  • You want to lean back against a cool surface. Wired found the heated panels sit directly behind the seats.

Heat and performance

Fortune’s tester reached 130°F in about 10 minutes and 140°F in 10 more, and gave temperature a 5 out of 5. Wired’s results were slower in cold, wet weather. Sun Home’s technician reached 170°F in just over an hour on a sunny day, per Wired, and suggested the door’s weather-stripping may let heat out. Wired also notes the default one-hour timer shuts the heat off.

Build, seating and features

Fortune’s tester called the seating ergonomic and long enough to lie down. Wired called the build sturdy and the finishes very nice, with a faint cedar scent. Both mention Bluetooth audio and an LED or chromotherapy light panel. Sun Home lists 15 heaters (5 far-infrared and 10 full-spectrum), 7,200W on a 240V 30A circuit, a 1,070 lb weight, ultra-low EMF under 0.5 mG and red light therapy.

Setup

Sun Home says assembly takes two or more people and half a day. Wired’s reviewer said it took a weekend, not counting the electrical work, and the third-party installer was not “white glove”. Wired says Sun Home has since revised the manual and added a video.

Price

  • Sun Home, 2026-10-12: $13,899 sale, $14,499 regular. The page said “Low in stock right now”.
  • Fortune: $14,499.
  • Wired (March 2025): $11,699.

How it compares

It is the largest and most expensive cabin we list. For a cheaper cedar cabin see the SunRay Sedona. For a 3-person indoor option see the Heatwave Santa Fe. For a smaller budget start see the Dynamic Elite 1-Person.

Bottom line

A big, good-looking outdoor infrared cabin that Fortune loved and Wired found pricey and fussy. It makes sense if you have the space, the circuit and the budget. Check the maker for today’s price.

Luminar 5 FAQ

How hot does the Sun Home Luminar 5-Person get?
Fortune lists a 170°F maximum, and its tester reached 140°F in about 20 minutes. Wired's reviewer saw it "limp toward" 140°F on damp, cold Pacific Northwest nights, about 150°F after an hour. A Sun Home technician hit 170°F in just over an hour on a sunny day, per Wired.
What power does it need?
A dedicated 30 amp GFCI circuit, per Sun Home. Fortune lists 240V, 30A. Wired's reviewer had to rewire a dedicated outlet before assembly.
Does it fit five people?
Fortune's tester called it a "true five-person layout". Wired's reviewer found it fits five only if they are small, and was comfortable with two adults and possibly a third. Sun Home lists exterior dimensions of 82 x 51.5 x 82.5 inches.
Is it an indoor or outdoor sauna?
Outdoor. Sun Home describes an aerospace-grade aluminum exterior around a Canadian red cedar interior, and says the all-weather cover is included but optional.
What are the downsides reviewers raised?
Wired's reviewer reported a slow heat-up in cold weather, heated panels directly behind the seats that burned her back, a door lock that engages from the outside, and a rough assembly. Fortune's only cons were price, outdoor space and circuit needs, and a more involved install.
