The number on a sauna’s product page is the size of the box. The space you need is bigger, and it depends on how the cabin gets into the room, how it is put together, where the plug is and where the door swings. This guide gives the exterior size of ten infrared cabins from our model data, then walks through the practical questions that decide whether a cabin fits: floor area, ceiling height, assembly room, door swing and power. Dimensions come from manufacturer listings recorded in our data and can change between revisions, so confirm the maker’s current numbers before you order.

How big is an infrared sauna?

Floor area is simply width times depth from the listed exterior dimensions. The smallest cabin in our data, the Dynamic Elite 1-Person, is 28 by 35.5 inches, about 6.9 square feet, and stands 65 inches tall. Next come the Dynamic Barcelona at 39 by 36 inches (about 9.8 square feet, 73 inches tall) and the Sunray Sedona at 36 by 42 inches (about 10.5 square feet, 75 inches tall).

The two-person cabins cluster between roughly 11 and 14 square feet. The Dynamic Venice Elite is 43 by 37 inches (11.0 square feet) and only 68 inches tall, the lowest of the two-person cabins. The JNH Joyous 2-Person is 47.3 by 39.5 inches (about 13.0), the Radiant Coronado is 49 by 39 (about 13.3), and the Dynamic Andora is 47 by 43.1 (about 14.1, 74.4 inches tall).

Three-person cabins jump to about 17.5 square feet for the Dynamic Madrid (42 by 60 inches) and about 19.5 for the corner-style Heatwave Santa Fe (53 by 53). At the top, the five-person Sun Home Luminar 5 is 82 by 51.5 inches, about 29.3 square feet, and 82.5 inches tall.

One thing to notice: “two-person” does not mean one size. In our data a two-person cabin can be as small as 11 square feet or as large as 14, and the Barcelona is listed as a one to two person cabin at under 10. Rated occupancy is each maker’s claim, and the footprint is a better guide to how roomy the inside will feel. A cabin for two that is 37 inches deep has a different feel from one that is 43 inches deep, even when both list the same wattage.

Will it fit under my ceiling?

Most of the cabins here are 73 to 75 inches tall, about six feet one inch to six feet three inches. Measure your room rather than assume that the listed height leaves enough assembly space. It becomes a question in basements with ducts, under sloped ceilings in attics and bonus rooms, and under a low soffit. The Luminar 5 at 82.5 inches is the tall outlier and needs the most headroom. Check the maker’s assembly instructions for how the panels are raised, in case that needs extra headroom.

How much room do I need to assemble it?

This is where the box size misleads. Dynamic’s Venice Elite manual says its panels need space to be moved around. When placing the floor panel, it says to leave enough room to move around it during assembly. It asks for a location that is dry, level and away from any source of water, with the main power cord easily accessible, and says two adults are required for installation. Its assembly order is floor panel, front wall panel with the glass door, right and left side wall panels, rear panel, bench heat emitter panel, bench, roof panel and roof cover (the manual notes that the order can vary). Its preparation list names a Phillips screwdriver and a ladder; later steps also use the supplied hex wrench.

Taken together, that tells you to think about the room in two stages. First, can two adults carry the panels from the front door to the room, including turns, stairs and doorways? Second, once the panels are in the room, can two people stand around the floor panel and tilt each wall into place? A room that holds the finished cabin with an inch to spare may still be too tight to build in. Our small apartment guide covers the tight-space version of this problem.

Where does the door swing?

Our data does not give door swing for each model, so this is a measurement to take from the maker’s drawing. Dynamic’s Venice Elite uses a front glass door, and the cabin has a movable roof vent that the manual says to use, or to leave the door slightly open, to regulate the temperature. Check the door direction on the maker’s drawing and leave a clear zone in front of it. A bathroom corner or closet that fits the cabin’s footprint can still leave no room to get in.

What about the plug and the circuit?

Space includes the outlet. In our data, nine of the ten cabins use a standard 120 volt circuit. The Barcelona, Sedona, Venice Elite, Andora, Coronado, Dynamic Elite and Madrid list 120V and 15A, the JNH Joyous lists 110 to 120V and 15A, and the Heatwave Santa Fe lists 120V and 20A. Only the Luminar 5, at 7,200 watts, lists a 240V, 30A dedicated circuit. Wattages in our data run from 1,290 on the Sedona to 2,100 on the Madrid for the 120V models.

The Dynamic Venice Elite manual says the unit requires a 120V, 15 amp dedicated circuit, and that the power cord connects to a dedicated wall outlet. It also says not to use a wall receptacle adapter, surge protector or extension cord between the sauna cord and the wall outlet. So the practical rule is: the outlet must be close enough that the cord reaches without an extension, and nothing else should share that circuit. Our electrical requirements guide goes further, and an electrician is the right person to confirm your panel can support it.

What floor and location should I choose?

Dynamic’s manual asks for a dry, level spot away from any source of water. The wall panels seat into guide inserts on the floor panel, so a flat base makes sense. The same manual says to wipe the interior with water and a damp cloth only and never to store or stack objects on the sauna, so a cabin in a crowded garage corner is not ideal. Whether a cabin can stand on carpet is a question for the maker of your model, since the manual we read does not address it.

How do I check my room?

Measure the room width, depth and ceiling height. Subtract the cabin’s exterior width and depth, and look at what is left on the door side. Mark the footprint on the floor with painter’s tape, and stand in front of it to see how the door and the walkway feel. Check the outlet distance with a tape. Then check the route from the delivery door to the room, since panels have to travel it. If you are between two models, the smaller cabin that you will actually use is generally the better choice, and our 1-person vs 2-person comparison explains the trade-off.

Common questions

How much space does an infrared sauna need? In our data, exterior footprints run from about 6.9 square feet for a one-person cabin to about 29.3 for a five-person cabin. Two-person cabins listed here are about 11 to 14 square feet. Leave extra room for assembly, the door and the outlet.

How tall are they? Most are 73 to 75 inches. The Venice Elite is 68 inches, the Dynamic Elite 1-Person 65, and the Luminar 5 is 82.5.

Do they need a special outlet? Nine of ten list a standard 120V circuit, and the Dynamic manual calls for a dedicated 15 amp circuit with no extension cord. The Luminar 5 lists a 240V, 30A dedicated circuit.

Can I assemble one alone? Dynamic’s manual says two adults are required for installation.
